CAROLYN GROSSÉ GAWARECKI  N.W.S. W.H.S. Carolyn received her BA from Douglass College in 1953 and later continued graduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Carolyn initiated her career in 1953 teaching art in Highland Park High School in New Jersey and in 1955 became the first woman to work as an Exhibits Designer for the Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution.  Since 1963 she has taught adult watercolor classes at all competency levels for the City of Falls Church, VA.  Inthe early 90's she joined the Art League School Faculty in Alexandria, VA where she currently teaches advanced watercolor techniques.  She has conducted numerous workshops in the U.S. and Mexico, and has taken large groups of artists to paint in Ireland, England, France, Greece, Italy and most recently Spain. 

The March 2000 issue of American Artist Magazine featured photographs of her teaching at some of her European workshops. She is the founder and first president of The Potomac Valley Watercolorists, has participated in the U. S. International Arts in the Embassies Program, wrote an article for North Light Magazine, March 1978; authored "Texture a Watercolor with Casein", January '91 for Artist's Magazine; and "The Versatile Vignette" summer issue of Watercolor Magic l997.  She was also a finalist in The Artist's Magazine Annual Competition in '91, '95, and '97 (each over 15,000 entries).  Her paintings were featured on the cover of the Hill Rag Congressional Guide in '85, '89, and '91.  Carolyn provided the cover illustration for the book "A Virginia Village Revisited" which also contains one of her paintings.  Her works are printed in the books "The Best of Watercolor" and "Places" by Rockport Press and "The Artistic Touch III" by Creative Press.


Carolyn is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, Knickerbocker Artists, Virginia Watercolor Society, Southern Watercolor Society, Baltimore Watercolor Society, the Washington Watercolor Society, and the Potomac Valley Watercolorists.  She has been elected to the Watercolor USA Honor Society.  She is represented by McBride's Gallery, Annapolis, Maryland; Atlantic Gallery, Washington, D.C.; The Art League Gallery, Alexandria, Virginia; and the Byrne Gallery, Middleburg,  Virginia.  She has had numerous one-woman shows in the galleries that represent her and also at Cudahy's Gallery, Richmond, VA; National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md.; Children's Hospital, Washington, DC; and the French Embassy, Washington, DC.  Carolyn was awarded a grant to paint in Dinan, France for the month of June1997. Douglass College in New Brunswick, NJ, selected one of her paintings for their first Artist Series Exhibition during the summer of 1999.

Carolyn's expertise as an art show judge and lecturer is in frequent demand.  She has judged the Panama City, Florida, National Watercolor Show; the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild State Show, Charlottesville, VA; the National Capitol Orchid Society Art Show, Washington, DC; plus numerous area shows in Maryland, DC, and Virginia.  She is a very popular and sought after teacher with students waiting in line many hours to enroll in her classes.  She receives numerous requests for watercolor workshops from art groups locally and throughout the Mid - Atlantic States.  Carolyn has received well over 100 awards, 9 of them Best in Show.  Carolyn is married to Dr. Stephen Gawarecki, Rutgers geology '51, '52 who is now retired and is currently a professional art photographer.
